I was very apprehensive about painting this model. I’ve finished lots of infantry-size models of all shapes and sizes, and even two Invader ATVs. But nothing as big as this. Indeed, I found it impossible to avoid sticking my grubby fingers all over the model and praying for the paint not to come off.
Fortunately, my extensive airbrushing experience, alongside my airbrushing booth, stopped all the rubbish getting stuck in my basecoat, and I was rewarded with a strong, smooth green which was perfect for my needs.
I also discovered that the little pocket in front of the sarcophagus was quite difficult to get into. Fortunately, whilst completing the miniature, I learned that the front of the model could be removed to allow greater access to the hull of the model. As I have three of these to finish, the second model will have the front plate painted separately.

It was also possible to remove the side-mounted weapons, allowing for easier access to the hull, and the weapon mount itself. Stating the obvious, subassemblies are very helpful for vehicles, to break down huge models into smaller, more manageable chunks.

I painted the weapon mounts first and then the main chassis, which also meant I got a neat kick of dopamine when it was time to glue the weapons in place, and complete my work.
As a proof of concept, I deliberately kept the model plain. In fact, I only added flames to the Lascannon mount because I kept mucking up the heavy support decal. In future, because every Dreadnought is unique, I will muck around with the idea of blocking out different panels in black, to help each dreadnought stand out.

Once the varnish went on and covered all my sins, I felt very happy with how it had all come together. And being able to slay the dragon of “what will this look like sitting next to the rest of my army”, that had proven somewhat insidious and paralysing to my progress.
But, I am proud at having handled the challenge – that Land Raider I have blocked in doesn’t look so scary now after all.

With this model’s completion, I am seriously close to having 2000 points fully painted. The unit of ICC and Azrael, alongside a second Ballistus Dreadnought, and we’ll be ready to go!
Hopefully Herocon has a late scratching…
